MEI Students’ Study Trip 2014

June 1 to June 7, 2014

The traditional study trip for students of Master in European Integration, generation 2013/2014, was organized during the first week of June. The program of the study trip was the most comprehensive so far. Students were given the opportunity to visit numerous institutions of importance for EU law and European integration, situated in four different countries.

Such an outstanding program of the study trip would not have been possible without generous donations provided by IRZ (German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation) and the Embassy of Norway in Serbia. IRZ supported the study trip with an amount of 5.000 EUR, whereas the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Serbia contributed with an amount of 2.000 EUR. The University of Belgrade Faculty of Law once again expresses its gratitude to IRZ and Royal Norwegian Embassy for supporting the study trip through these more than generous contributions and thus enabling our master students to deepen their knowledge and widen their experiences by being given the opportunity to visit the most significant EU institutions.

After arriving to Strasbourg via Stuttgart on June 1st, students visited the city of Strasbourg and the European Court of Human Rights on Monday, June 2nd, 2014. In the European Court of Human Rights students and their professors met with Judge Dragoljub Popović, judge elected in respect of the Republic of Serbia and with Aysegül Uzun Marinković, lawyer at the Court’s Registry.

On Tuesday, June 3rd, students visited the Council of Europe and German Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. During the morning, students visited the Debating Chamber of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and afterwards attended the lecture “The role of the Council of Europe in the European political landscape”. After taking the shuttle to Karlsruhe in the afternoon, students were offered a guided tour of the German Federal Constitutional Court. Their hosts were Mr. Schütter and Mr. Hamdorf, research assistants to the President of the Court. After the guided tour, students attended the lecture on the European Integration Processes in the case-law of the German Constitutional Court and actively took part in the discussion that followed the lecture.

On Wednesday, June 4th, students once again visited the European Court of Human Rights, this time to attend the hearing in the case Vasiliauskas v. Lithuania.

The following day, Thursday, June 5th, students spent in Brussels. In the morning they visited the European Commission and attended three lectures. Mr. Jo Vandercappellen, Member of the External Speakers Team, gave a lecture entitled “The Role of the European Commission”, whereas Mr. Nicolas Breczewski, Directorate-General Justice, held an interesting lecture on “Union Citizenship and Freedom of Movement”. The third lecture organized for our students during their visit to the European Commission related to the “European Integration Process of Serbia”. During afternoon, students and their professors visited the Serbian Delegation in the EU in Brussels and met with Mr. Miloš Todorović.

After taking the train to Luxembourg on June 6th, students were given the opportunity to visit the European Court of Justice. Their visit started with a film "DVD about the Court". Students also benefitted from the meeting with two judges at the Court of Justice of the European Union, with Mr M. Ilešič, President of Chamber, Court, and Judge V. Tomljenović, Judge at the General Court. These distinguished judges presented their working experiences in the Court, and initiated a fruitful discussion with the MEI students. The visit to the Court was completed by a guided tour of the Court’s buildings.

Fifteen students of Master in European Integration were accompanied by three professors of our Faculty – Prof. Dr. Dragica Vujadinović, Head of Master in European Integration, Doc. Dr. Tanasije Marinković and Doc. Dr. Maja Lukić.
